Aiud is documentary attested since 1293. For more than two centuries, it was the Capital town of the Downstream Alba County. Transformed into a municipal town in 1994, Aiud has now 31.000 inhabitants and it is a genuine combination between tradition and modernity.

The existence in the town, since the eighteenth century, of a tradition in the locksmith and carpentry production, leaded to the formation in 1894, of a locksmith and building materials factory, which has developed the present metalworking company.

In 1931 it was transformed into the “GENIUS” factory for technical products, with its headquarters in Brasov, and since 1933 in Aiud is certified the existence of the “Engineer A. I. Stoica Technical Laboratory” which manufactures, besides the pressed and metallic packages, equipment for the army’s endowment.

In 1948, the factory has been reorganised and has functioned under the name of “Aiud’s Rapid Factory” and had as manufacturing profile, pumps and equipment for fire brigades, locksmith tools, metallic wheelbarrows, simple agricultural machines, cast iron housekeeping products.

Since 1951, the factory was registered as a maintenance and repair workshop for rolling equipment, subordinate of Iron and Steelmaking Company Hunedoara, being reshaped on locomotive, rail car, casting truck, miner truck and cable car repairs.

Consequently, at the end of 1954, the factory became a unit with its own economical administration under the name of “Aiud’s Metalworking Plant”, having as manufacturing profile, the rolling equipment’s repair for the entire Iron and Steelmaking sector.
Starting with 1958, the plant specialises in spare parts, equipments, metallic structures manufacturing, for the Iron and Steelmaking, Metalworking and Machines Engineering industry.

The investments made between 1966-1970 were mainly directed towards the development of the hot sector, specially of the centrifugal casting, of the metallic structures’ construction and of the technological equipment manufacturing.

1970-1980 is the period for the factory to profit of another 2 development stages having as result the extension of the existing manufacturing capacities, the increase of the integration degree, new products of high technology being inserted. It is the period for the factory to be considered as “The Chief Engineer “ of the Romanian Metalworking and Iron and Steelmaking industry.

Metalurgica's position on the market allowed that, in December 2006, the company to be sold to REMARUL 16 FEBRUARIE Cluj-Napoca , and beginning with that data a new life period started for Metalurgica, a period of modernisation and developing.

Since 1990, the METALURGICA Aiud crossed through an accustom period to the market economy, harmonising the company’s possibilities with the market requests’, so after re-organising and assets’ selling successive periods, reached an optimum share between export and domestic market of 50% to 50% .

Since 15 of April 2008, our company is named “ METALURGICA TRANSILVANA AIUD S.A.”. This date represents also a new beginning in what concerns our identity and our mission.
